The Tanaka family has been farming vegetables in Boulder County since the 20’s. Dick Tanaka grew up in Erie Colorado one of nine children. He and his family grew up poor during the great depression as did many. His family was met with tragedy when his mother died when Dick was only two. He quit grade school to help out his father on the farm. His father passed away when Dick was ten. The nine brothers and sisters were split up amongst family friends. He returned to school and went on to join the Army. Later on, he and his brothers Sam, Bobby, and Rocky started their own vegetable farm together. It became a booming retail and wholesale vegetable business in the 70's and 80's with accounts which included Safeway and King's Soopers, to name a few and were loading trucks with destinations throughout the country.
Since then, many of his siblings have passed on leaving himself and his sister Ruth of Windsor. Dick started his own wholesale produce business and roadside market in 1992, and continues to provide the same level of care and attention to his crops as he always has. Many farmers in Boulder County consider him to be a sort of a mentor, or at least a reference as he holds a tremendous knowledge of the area’s soil and climate.
The farm offers a vast selection of vegetables in the wholesale vegetable business and roadside market. The original roadside market was started on a little wagon on the side of the farm road by Sam and Bobby's oldest children, (but that's another story for another day). Our original roadside vegetable market is what helped turn the name "Tanaka" into a regular household name in Colorado. So, please review our site and if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us. As experienced vegetable wholesalers, we greatly look forward to the chance of doing business with you!
